BE-SL05 mineral fibre parameters explained: L/D >= 60, shot < 1%

Abstract

BE-SL05 is Boer's friction-grade mineral fibre with a length-to-diameter ratio L/D ≥60 and shot above 125µm below 1% — corresponding to relatively high fibre purity and a strong skeletal-reinforcement orientation. Parameters come from the company brochure; the batch outgoing report governs. Note that fibre parameters affect reinforcement and dispersion, but final behaviour such as brake noise and wear is set jointly by formulation, mixing and hot-pressing.

Two core numbers to remember: L/D ≥60 and shot (>125µm) <1%. One describes whether the fibre is long and fine enough; the other whether it is clean enough. Both are company product data, subject to the batch report. L/D is the ratio of fibre length to diameter. In a friction formulation, longer, finer fibres interlock more readily in the mix layer and act as a skeleton, helping to “hold” the friction particles and binder. L/D ≥60 is on the higher side among friction models, a strong reinforcement orientation — but whether it is realised also depends on adequate dispersion in mixing and on hot-press forming.

Shot are glassy spheres not drawn into fibre during forming; if too large they scratch the friction surface, increase wear and may disturb the friction coefficient. The industry controls friction on a >125µm (about 120-mesh) basis; BE-SL05 is below 1% on that basis. Lower shot gives a more uniform mix layer and helps reduce wear debris and local defects, but it does not by itself determine pad wear rate or brake noise.

How to work it into your process: during dry/wet mixing, open the fibre bundles per your process curve to avoid clumping of long fibres; tune the ratio with phenolic resin and friction modifiers to your own system, with the fibre taking only the skeleton and friction-layer-stabilising role; and on arrival check L/D and >125µm shot against this table by lot number before production.
