How well-recognized is the SGS asbestos-free report? A survey of Boer's testing bodies

Abstract

Boer's asbestos-free report is issued by SGS (SGS-CSTC Standards Technical Services Co., Ltd. Guangzhou), number CANEC25025290506, using the XRD method. SGS is one of the common third-party testing/inspection bodies in China, and its reports are generally accepted in export and customer audits. However, whichever body issues it, a report covers only the submitted batch. This article lists common testing channels objectively, without ranking bodies.

“Which body issued this asbestos-free report and will it be accepted?” is a common question when buying asbestos-free mineral fibre. The more important criteria are whether the body is qualified, whether the report number is verifiable, and whether the sample information and method are clearly stated. Common channels include: integrated third-party laboratories (SGS, CTI, PONY) — market-based, fast, with a verifiable report number; national inspection/quarantine bodies — with statutory or industry background, often used in disputes or government-led projects; and research-institute laboratories (e.g. the Shanghai Institute of Ceramics CAS) — strong in material characterisation and complex samples. This is a typological list, not a recommendation, and it does not imply Boer cooperates with all of them; Boer's current public asbestos-free report corresponds to the SGS channel.

Why this SGS report is often accepted by customers: the body has credibility (SGS runs inspection, verification, testing and certification worldwide with domestic labs); the report is complete (number CANEC25025290506, work no. GZP25-028794, sample name, XRD method, date and signatory Dongyu Xie); and it is traceable (customers can verify the number against the body, reducing risk of self-claiming).

The boundary: any third-party report covers only the submitted batch; even a well-known body cannot prove “asbestos-free for all products and all time.” When choosing a report, buyers should: check the body's qualifications and marks such as CNAS/CMA (per the report cover); verify that the report number, sample name, method, conclusion and date are complete and checkable; and file the report against the purchased lot, cross-checking with own incoming re-tests where needed.
